Mobile phones and Your Health Issues

One of the most common sights we see these days, is that of people with their mobile phones next to their ears. A boon for better communication, cell phone usage nonetheless has many health hazards. Various studies indicate that the emissions from a cell phone can be extremely harmful, causing genetic damage, tumors, memory loss, and increased blood pressure and weakening of the immune system. This is alarming information, and one has to take into account all these factors..

CELL PHONES AND HEALTH
Though there is no evidence of cell phones causing cancer or any such illness, but the suspicion, or fear of the same is not baseless either. The electromagnetic radiation from cell phones does have a potential link to cancer. The fact that this radiation is invisible, intangible, and enters and leaves our bodies without our knowledge makes it even more intimidating.

Possible hazards:Two minutes of exposure to emissions from mobile phones can disable a safety barrier in blood causing proteins and toxins to leak into the brain, could increase chances of developing Alzheimer's multiple sclerosis and Parkinson's. (Scientists at Sweden's Lund University)
Scientists say exposure to the phones' low-level radiation causes red blood cells to leak hemoglobin and can lead to heart disease and kidney stones.
Recent studies suggesting a link between cell-phone use and brain tumors, and the possibility that the microwaves could ignite petroleum fumes at gas stations.
A cell phone unit, or communications tower, has so many of thee radiation emanating gadgets. This can be a problem for its immediate environment.

SPECIFIC HEALTH CONCERNS
Cancer / Tumors
Studies have been conducted suggesting that rats that have been exposed to microwaves similar to the sort generated by mobile phones but more powerful, showed breaks in their DNA which could indicate an adverse effect. Also, mice exposed to radiation for 18 months developed brain tumors. Though of course, these studies are not concrete proof.
Blood Pressure
It was observed that people using cell phones were prone to high blood pressure. Again, there isn't any concrete evidence of the same.
Pregnancy
A study at the University of Montpellier in France was carried out on 6000 chick embryos and suggested that the heavily exposed chick eggs were five times less likely to survive than the control group.
This study raised questions about possible effects on pregnant women but it has not yet appeared in peer-reviewed scientific literature or been reproduced, so its findings are difficult to assess.
Headaches, Heating Effects, Fatigue
A study brought out that longer the people used mobile phones, the more likely they were to report symptoms such as hot ears, burning skin, headaches and fatigue.
The study did not include a control group (that is people who do not use mobile phones, to make a comparison); therefore the symptoms reported could have been caused by any number of other factors in the mobile phones users' environment, such as working with computers, stress, driving or reading.
Memory
There have been various studies into the connection between mobile phones and memory loss. A study looked into the effect of radiofrequency (RF) on the section of rats' brains that is linked with the memory. The results showed that RF could modify signals in the cells in a part of the brain that is responsible for learning and short term memory.
Posture (holding phone between raised shoulder and ear)
Some researchers claim that holding a mobile phone between the raised shoulder and the ear could have a damaging effect on muscles, bones, tendons and discs. These problems would apply equally to a cordless phone or a landline phone as to a mobile phone and are the effect of bad posture.
Mobile Phones and Children
Because of their smaller heads, thinner skulls and higher tissue conductivity, children may absorb more energy from a given phone than adults.

PREVENTION TIPS Cell phones should be used for emergencies, and not for long conversations.

Mobile phones should not be used in Intensive Care Units of hospitals as they can pose a danger to patients by interfering with the working of pacemakers and defibrillators.
People with hearing aids should not use mobile phones.
Base stations, which have low powered antennae on their terrace to communicate with cell phones, should not be located near children's schools and playgrounds.

CELL PHONES WHILE DRIVING
Studies indicate that a lot of car accidents have happened, while the driver was on the phone. This is because while driving, one obviously needs to concentrate, and talking on a phone doesn't help. Some countries like Portugal have banned the use of cell phones, which may not be very practical, as their main use is to be reachable while you are on the move. Thus, it is important to take certain precautions while driving:

Position your phone within easy reach so that you don't have to take your eyes off the road.
Get to know the features of your cell phone - speed dial, redial, voice mail, they can be your lifesaver. But don't dial and drive at the same time. Use a hands free kit.
Avoid using a phone when road conditions are hazardous or traffic is heavy. You can let your voice mail take messages and then call back later.
Don't engage in stressful conversations that may distract your attention from the road.
Don't take notes or look up phone numbers whilst driving, wait till you can pull over.
User abbreviated speed dialing. In fact, voice activated dialing is even better. It leaves both hands free. Frequently called numbers can be programmed.
Have an answering machine installed that could take messages until you can return the calls. Let your co-passenger handle the calls if you are not travelling alone.

Globalisation is the new mantra. In this age, it is very difficult not to have technology. But with technology, come certain hazards. The only way to beat these is again, better technology. Electromagnetic radiation is everywhere. More and more wireless communication services (cellular phones, paging, wireless Internet) are expected so is the artificial electromagnetic radiation. A 15 digit code will appear on the screen after pressing send button, or in some phones it comes automatically just by writing above given code. . This Number is unique to your Handset. Write it down and keep it somewhere safe. Should your phone get stolen, you can phone your service provider and give them this code. They will then be able to block your handset so even if the thief changes the SIM card, your phone will be totally useless. You probably won't get your phone back, but at least you know that whoever stole it can't use/sell it either. If everybody does this, there would be no point in people stealing mobile phones

WAP or wireless Application Protocol, adds a new dimension to the Internet i.e. mobility. With a mobile phone or a laptop that supports WAP you can book tickets, order food and check your bank account at any time. It also includes services such as downloading entire phone books and new, improved ways of controlling outgoing and incoming calls will make mobile telephony even easier. To access WAP services you need a WAP product. Besides the WAP compatibility, WAP products have a large full graphic display and include a micro browser. The basic function of WAP is for mobile phones to be able to communicate with a server installed in the mobile phone network. It brings together the web and telecommunications. Of course, as all new technologies, WAP also comes with its questions and hesitations.

HISTORY AND BRIEF TECHNOLOGICAL OVERVIEW

What is the difference between WAP and SIM?
One can create custom-built applications with SIM Application Toolkit (ATK) that runs on the SIM card in the mobile phone. A SIM card is the Smart card that identifies the user and where the user's phonebook is located. With SIM ATK one can set up new menus, show text in the display, get access to the phonebook and send / receive SMS messages. The difference between WAP and SIM ATK is that SIM ATK applications are located in the phone on the SIM card, and to update an application one has to exchange the SIM cards of all the users. WAP applications on the other hand are fetched from a web-server and can be updated at one central location. Smart cards will have a role to play in the fuure in WAP security and user/operator personalization.

Life without a cell-phone… how did we survive without them? From a fashion statement, status symbol, luxury to a necessity, the journey of cellular telephones has been one of great technological advancement. But do we, who take these "cells" for granted, ever think of the technology behind it? A cell phone service is based on a simple idea. It is like a two-way radio, turned into a circuit switched telephone network, comparable in functionality to its landline counterpart. We had wireless sets before, used by security, police, organizers etc. but cell phones were not only accessible easily, they were more personal.

THE CELLULAR TECHNOLOGY
There is a type of low power two-way radio base station, which serves a coverage area, divided into many smaller zones (cells). Telephone handsets continuously search for the closest base station, and hop from base station to base station if the user was on the move. This strategy of replacing one high power base station with many low power base stations distributed throughout the coverage area made it possible to handle far more subscribers, and reduced the power requirements for wireless telephones.
Reducing the amount of power needed to carry a conversation through the airwaves, made it possible for manufacturers to produce much smaller phones. While solid state circuitry advances have played an important role in reducing the size and weight of portable phones, the reduction of power requirements eliminated the need for bulky, heavy batteries to power handsets.
The first cellular telephone network put to widespread use was an analog system called AMPS. An AMPS is an analog, frequency modulation scheme (the same scheme used in FM radio). At the time cellular was introduced, FM modulation/demodulation circuitry was a commodity product, and so this was the most cost effective way to introduce cellular service. Digital cellular did not become cost effective until the 1990s when DSP based platforms came down in price enough to make it practical to create an all-digital telephone handset.

HOW IT WORKS:
Scan Channels: A scan for the closest cell site near you is made, so that you can get the strongest signals possible due to your location at the moment.
Send Message: The phone then sends a short message to the cell site verifying the MIN, ESN, and the number that you have just entered to call.

Assign Channel: After verifying the above information and your number, the base assigns a message to your phone, telling it where the conversation is. Talk: The phone then gets on that channel and begins to ring.

A cell phone has become easily accessible today, as it can fit in most pockets. (pun intended!) a decent cell-phone will be available starting Rs. 5000/- and of course, the sky is the limit if you want an expensive model. Another thing to note is that cell phone prices are going down as the market becomes more competitive.
Small is in. At least where the cell phones go. The new tiny single-chassis phones are called "candy bar" models, a reference to their shape. Many weigh less than 200 grams, battery included. The familiar squat flip-phones -- those that open like communicators from the old "Star Trek" -- also are ultra-light.
Batteries are getting smaller too. New nickel metal hydride (NiMH) batteries are smaller and lighter than the Nickel Cadmium (NiCad) batteries, but often provide about 40 percent less power. The latest batteries are the Lithium Ion (Li-Ion) and the Lithium Polymer batteries, which are of superior quality.
The Cellular Telecommunications Industry Association (CTIA) is a standard performance testing association for cell phones. Like an ISI seal, it too has an approval seal.

WHAT CAN GO WRONG WITH A CELL PHONE
Your cell phone is tailor-made to deal with tough conditions, which come from the fact that it is a mobile service. But nonetheless, the instruments can take only so much abuse, and are susceptible to breaking.

If your phone gets wet, or if you dial the numbers with wet hands, and water gets into the buttons and internal corrosion may occur. Make sure your phone is dry, especially when it is switched on.
Using a belt-clip or a holster keeps the cell phone firmly in its place, and prevents it from falling off accidentally.
Try not to stuff your phone in with all your other worldly possessions, it may cause the glass display screens to crack.
Extreme heat can cause damage to the cell phone electronics and the cell phone battery. Extreme cold can also cause a temporary loss of the display screen.

WHILE DRIVING
Do not use the cell phone in heavy traffic.
Do not dial while driving, if it is so important, ask someone to call for you. If you are alone, pull over on the side and dial.

How to use your phone as a modem:
You can go online to send faxes and e-mail using your cellular phone as a wireless "modem" for your laptop. To do this, you'll need a phone that can function as a modem, a cable to connect your phone to your laptop, and a carrier that offers Internet or data options. For cellular phones without a built-in modem, you'll need to purchase a cellular-compatible PC card modem that works with your laptop. You'll also need a compatible cable to connect the card modem in the laptop to your cell phone. Sometimes the PC card and cable are packaged together as a kit i.e. You can click on the Service Plans tab to see which carriers in your market sell that phone.
Newer phones have built-in modem capability, so your laptop doesn't need a PC card, but you'll still have to purchase a compatible cable to connect the phone to your laptop's serial port.

Getting Web Updates on your phone:
Some carriers offer news, stock and sports updates with activation of a Web-messaging option or service plan. Other carriers provide free news updates as long as you subscribe to text-messaging services.
When you sign up for these services, carriers require you to establish an account either on their Web site or on a Web site designed to provide your updates. Once you establish an account, you will be able to select and modify your updates, including when you receive them, simply by accessing your account via the Web site.
The updates arrive as text messages (also called short messaging service), so your phone needs to support this feature. Depending on the carrier, updates are subject to character limitations ranging from 100 to 150 characters.

Alarm Clocks on phones:
With most phones, you simply select the alarm option and enter a time. Some alarms will work even when the phone is turned off. Usually, the phone's alarm will sound just like your ringer alert.

E-mail and Faxes on your phone:
You can also send and receive data/fax documents, access the internet, email accounts and corporate databases whenever you are on the move. All you need is a compatible phone and computer and the connecting accessories (unless you use infrared). Your mobile acts as a phone line. Calls are normally charged at the same rate as voice calls. CELLULAR PHONES AND HEALTH HAZARDS
Although no conclusive evidence has been found linking mobile phone exposure to brain cancer, several new studies suggest that the potential threat to health is greater than previously thought. Another cause for concern is the effect on health due to Radio Frequency (RF) exposure. RF can penetrate exposed tissue, is absorbed by the body and produces heat although the body's normal thermo regulating process carries this heat away.
According to new WHO (World Health Organisation) guide rules:
Mobile phone users should limit their exposure to harmful radio frequencies by cutting the length of calls.
Hands-free devices cut exposure by keeping the instrument away from the head and body.
Driving cum mobile phone talking should be banned.
Mobile phones should not be used in Intensive Care Units of hospitals as they can pose a danger to patients by interfering with the working of pacemakers and defibrillators.
People with hearing aids should not use mobile phones.
Base stations, which have low powered antennae on their terrace to communicate with cell phones, should not be located near children's schools and playgrounds.

How do you make money on internet at home? You are boy or a girl, teenager or an adult, man or women, everyone can make money on internet at home. There are at least two ways in which sites can make money: (1) Advertising Revenue (2) Selling Goods and Services

Making Money From Advertisement:
If you look at many websites, you will probably notice that there are banner advertisements displayed on most pages. If you are a newcomer to the scene, you might think that you must either be a company or that your site must be famous before you can get advertisers, just as it is the case in hardcopy publications. In reality, anyone with a website can get advertisers. While it is true that if your site is well-known, you may get companies contacting you to offer to advertise on your site, you can get advertising revenue even if you are just starting out and your site is relatively unknown. The way to do this is to join as an "affiliate" of various sites, either directly, or through an affiliate network. An affiliate network is simply an intermediary where you can select from a variety of advertisers.

Payment Methods:
Before joining any program, you should probably be aware of the different payment schemes available.

Pay Per Impression:
Here, you are paid according to the number of times the advertiser's banner is displayed on your site. The amount you earn is typically calculated based on the number of thousand impressions of the banner (impressions = number of times the banner is displayed), often abbreviated CPM (cost per thousand, with the M being the Latin numeral for thousand). That is, $10 CPM means that you get paid $10 for 1,000 displays of the banner. In general, the amount paid is usually small, but it is easy to earn since every time a visitor loads the page, you earn. This is known as a "high conversion rate". Needless to say, this method will allow you to automatically earn more if your site attracts a lot of visitors.

Pay Per Click:
When you are paid per click, you are only paid when visitors click the advertiser's banner on your site. The amount paid is usually higher than the pay per impression scheme. Whether you get a high conversion rate here depends on the banner (whether it attracts people to click it), although in general, it has a higher conversion rate than the pay per sale method. A high traffic site will probably enjoy a higher click rate than a lower traffic site, although you will probably get better results if your banners are carefully selected to suit the target audience of your site.

Pay Per Sale or Lead:
While you will probably get the highest payment rates with this method, it has the lowest conversion rate of the three schemes. You will only earn if your visitors click through the banner and either purchase an item from the advertiser or take some other prescribed action (eg, sign up for a service). Like the Pay Per Click method, you get much better results if you carefully select your advertisers to suit the target audience of your site.

To join an affiliate network or program, simply go to the site and complete their online application form. Some programs will give you instant approval while others require a human to check out your application before it is approved. Once it is approved, you'll be given some HTML code which you can cut and paste into your web page. Note that some affiliate networks and programs will not accept you unless you have a domain name.

How To Choose An Affiliate Program?
How should you choose an affiliate program? if you are targeting parents on your site, links to affiliates with educational software, books and the like may generate more revenue than banners that link to web hosting companies. The most important rule of choosing an affiliate program is to know your target audience. Another point to consider is whether you really want to join every single affiliate program that comes your way. Some studies suggest that sites that make the most money from affiliate programs are affiliates of only a small handful of programs. Furthermore, concentrating your advertisements from one network may allow you to be paid faster. If you advertise for hundreds of different affiliate networks on your site, you may wind up earning only (say) a few dollars per month from each network. If your advertiser's minimum payment amount is higher than what you can earn each month, it may take you a long time before you accrue enough to be paid.

On the other hand, that formula does not necessarily hold true for every site (or every page on your site, for that matter). For example, if your site has a particular theme, and an affiliate network only supports one or two suitable advertisers, you might want to sign up for a few affiliate networks so as to get a greater number of relevant advertisers. After all, advertisements that are relevant to your audience are more likely to be taken up than general advertisements. (What's the point of putting banners from only one affiliate if nobody is going to click them?)
